As
energy supplies tighten and fuel costs increase, tankless heaters
are gaining much attention across the United States. In a storage type
water heating units, energy is required to heat the water in the tank and to keep
it hot to be ready to use on demand. In both types,
the basic efficiencies of heating the water are very similar; in fact, the
energy consumptions are very similar. In the tankless type, however,
no energy is consumed in overcoming the standby losses encountered in a
storage water heater tank. Just think about this a moment. The average
household contains 2 adults and 2 children. All of these people are gone
from their residence approximately 9 hours per day. They also spend 6 to 8
hours per day sleeping. That is a minimum of 15 hours out of 24 where no
one needs hot water. Yet, in a storage type tank, water is being heated on
a regular basis to maintain the water at a preset temperature. This is a
huge waste of energy over a one year period. Save
money and still provide hot water on demand anytime, day or night. Some
manufacturers suggest that additional units. This is dependent however, on
sufficient electrical power or gas supply available in the home. Many
people install a point of use unit for areas such as kitchen sinks. This
would keep from interfering with hot water demands for showers, etc. Whole
house units are also available and often easy to install, depending on the
type of set up previously used. Installation in a new home is always the
preferred method but retro fits are also often possible and
advisable.
History These types of water heaters, also known as instantaneous, has
been commonly used in
Europe and Asia for over 50 years. Tankless heaters entered the North American
market about 25 years ago, and are poised to take over the commonly used
tank types as the water heater of choice for the American
public. This kind of heater supplies the user with an endless amounts of hot
water. They save energy, save space, and save money. These units use no energy until the tap is turned on (unlike
the storage tank type heaters that are constantly burning gas to keep the
liquid in the tank hot). They save the user 35% to 45% on their energy
costs, and therefore pay for themselves in 3 to 5 years. Because
there is nothing stored in the tank there is no buildup of sludge and
they remain biologically safe, giving the user cleaner and healthier hot
water.
Conclusion In short these little
wonders have many advantages. They are compact and easy to drain. They will fit in
areas where many storage types will not. In addition, they could serve
quite effectively in point of use applications. They save time and energy
and money which is a benefit everyone. Consider one today!
