BOTTLED WATER IS NOT ALWAYS SAFE TO DRINK
The Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) recently conducted a pilot study
of 25 bottling companies, and a bacteriological and chemical examination of
approximately 50 bottled water products. A summary of their report revealed:

• Eight percent of the samples were contaminated with coliform organism (an
  indication of fecal contamination).
• Discrepancies were found between the actual chemical composition and that
  was stated or implied on the label.
• None of the 25 bottlers ever reported having a complete chemical analysis of
  their bottled water, and laboratory control data revealed virtually a
  complete lack of source water testing or chemical analysis of the finished
  water.
• Sanitary deficiencies were found in all 25 plants.
• In some cases, labeling of bottled water did not correspond with the
  contents revealed by analysis. Results of chemical analysis revealed trace
  amounts of: chlorine, sulfate, nitrate, copper, manganese, lead, iron, zinc,
  mercury and arsenic in every sample.
• Plastic bottles arrived at the plants in cardboard cartons and were shipped
  without caps. Thus, the bottle interiors were exposed to airborne
  contamination and foreign matter. They filled the bottles without cleaning
  them first.

A 20/20 News consultant stated:   "Bottled water is watched and tested less
than tap water... Municipal water (tap water) is subjected to 53 daily
tests... Bottled water is only monitored on the honor system."
